60年代から活躍し多くのヒットを放ってきたR&Bヴォーカル・グループ、グラディス・ナイト＆ピップスのメンバー、エドワード・パッテンが2月25日、デトロイトで死去した。66歳だった。
グラディス・ナイト＆ピップスは、50年代からアトランタを本拠に活動を開始したヴォーカル・グループ。リード・シンガーが女性のグラディス・ナイトで、そのバックで3人の男性がコーラスをつけていた。このコーラスをピップスといい、パッテンはそのピップスの一員。グラディス・ナイトのいとこにあたる。
グラディス・ナイト＆ピップスは61年に「エヴリ・ビート・オブ・マイ・ハート」が初ヒット。その後、いくつかのインディを経て、67年、モータウン入り。ここで、「アイ・ハード・イット・スルー・ザ・グレイプヴァイン（悲しい噂）」、「イフ・アイ・ワー・ユア・ウーマン」（70年）などのヒットを放ち人気を集め、73年、ブッダへ移籍。「ミッドナイト・トレイン・トゥ・ジョージア」（73年）の大ヒットを皮切りに、次々と大ヒットを放った。
グラディスはその後、ソロに転じ、現在はソロ・シンガーとして活動中。
ピップスのコーラスは、グラディスを支えるもので、バックコーラスとして極めて王道を行くコーラスだった。
Singer, 66, passes away after suffering stroke

ATLANTA – A member of the Grammy-winning group Gladys Knight and The Pips has died. Edward Patten was 66.
William Guest, another member of the group, says Patten died early this morning at a hospital in Michigan, from a stroke he had suffered a few days before.
The Atlanta native had been living in Detroit.
Gladys Knight and the Pips’ roots are in Atlanta. But the group became prominent as part of the Motown music scene in Detroit in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The group’s hits include “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Midnight Train to Georgia.” They eventually disbanded to pursue solo careers.
Gladys Knight and the Pips were inducted into the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Guest remembers Patten as a good person who always had an interest in music.
